Unata is a group of talented individuals who are on a mission to shape the grocery shopping experience of the future. We are an award-winning, product-focused company that powers digital grocery experiences for our highly-respected grocery partners to better serve their hundreds of thousands of shoppers.

We provide a white-label platform for large retail grocery chains that provides a complete and unified digital customer experience, interweaving eCommerce, eCircular, and Digital Loyalty. Unata is headquartered in Toronto, ON and empowers respected retailers including Lowes Foods, Longo’s, Lunds & Byerly’s, and Raley’s.

What makes working at Unata so great?

  • Working with dedicated people that want to make an impact. This ain’t no another-day-another-dollar gig.
  • A working environment where your opinions are valued.
  • A team that appreciates learning new technologies and implementing them when they make sense.
  • Attending various developer conferences like PyCon where our team is regularly selected to present.
  • Competitive compensation and stock options.
  • Stocked-up fridge full of food and beer.
  • Totally-optional, totally-fun activities every month, coordinated by our very own Manager of Happiness, plus the regular ping pong battles or board games in the office every Friday.

What are we looking for?

TLDR; Unata is looking for a technical leader of our Data Science team. You might be the right fit for us if you’re an accomplished, seasoned, battle-scarred data scientist with a history of enterprise software (ideally SaaS).

Data Science at Unata is the foundation of everything we do to personalize the experience of our end users. Your team will become the pillar of a mature data culture within Unata. You’ll need to be ready to hit the keyboard from day one, even as you hire new team members to expand our capabilities (i.e. prepare to roll up your sleeves!). You love co-owning a product and building a team, company, and customer base around it. You’re a passionate believer in culture and leadership.

What will you be doing?

The Data Science team at Unata owns the following areas of our product: recommendations, analytics, and search. As Director, you will be directly involved and contribute to the design, software engineering, and testing of those systems. You’ll be responsible for the architecture and engineering of our data, and the development of predictive algorithms and machine learning that will drive recommendations, analysis and insights into how our platform is being used by our partners. Moreover, you’ll be responsible for educating and inspiring your fellow team members on the importance of data in everything we do.

Requirements, requirements, requirements

  • Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, etc.
  • Excellent object-oriented software design skills, and strong knowledge of Python (+ for Pandas, Scikits Learn, Numpy).
  • Excellent understanding of machine learning foundations.
  • Solid grasp of computer science concepts: data structures, algorithms, and programming paradigms. We are very keen on implementing red-black trees here at Unata.
  • You understand and implement engineering best practices: automated testing, version control systems, documentation, continuous integration, duct tape redundancy, etc.
  • You feel at home (cd ~) in a Unix development environment.
  • You can clearly communicate complex technical concepts.
  • You have built and shipped real software. You know… flappy bird clones… all that jazz.
  • You can demonstrate and talk about your willingness to learn new things. Like that new reactive microservice framework everyone’s been deploying on Docker lately.

  • Experience with the following technologies (C-c-c-c-Combo Breaker!):
  • Distributed data-stores and frameworks like Apache Cassandra, Apache Kafka, Elasticsearch, MapReduce.
  • RDBMS (+ for PostgreSQL).
  • Cool personal projects on github or other places, participation in Kaggle competitions.
  • Oh! And a willingness to be the greatest ping pong player in the world (or the office).
